Key Points

  • Ajax Interest: Eredivisie club Ajax had identified 27-year-old forward Joel Piroe as a key target to help rebuild their squad and were actively pursuing a deal with the player.
  • Valuation Barrier: Leeds United set a €15m (£12.8m) asking price for Piroe, which Ajax deemed excessive alongside their internal squad requirements to offload existing strikers such as Wout Weghorst.
  • West Ham Move: Premier League side West Ham United met the financial terms required by Leeds United, finalising a season-long loan deal with a conditional obligation to buy upon promotion.
  • Squad Dynamics: Piroe fell down the pecking order at Elland Road following squad additions by manager Daniel Farke, leading to his availability during the summer transfer window.
  • Player Perspective: Piroe confirmed that while the prospect of helping Ajax reclaim their domestic standing was an attractive ambition, the structural price gap prevented the transfer from materialising.

West Yorkshire (The Leeds Times) September 3, 2026 — In an unexpected turn during the summer transfer window, a financial valuation gap set by Leeds United effectively blocked Dutch giants Ajax from signing forward Joel Piroe, ultimately clearing the path for West Ham United to complete a deal for the 27-year-old attacker. As reported by media outlet FC Afkicken, Piroe disclosed that technical director Jordi Cruyff had opened negotiations on behalf of Ajax to bring him back to the Netherlands. Speaking on his discussions with the Eredivisie club, Piroe stated:

“Jordi had already contacted us. Ajax was a serious candidate for me in that regard. As you also gathered: they were really building a new team. They wanted to sign me as a striker as well. I felt confident. On the other hand, I also thought: if you can bring Ajax back to what they were a few years ago, that would be great. That is certainly an ambition.”

However, the transfer stalled due to the rigid financial conditions set by the Leeds United board. As reported by sports publication Sport Witness, Piroe explained that Leeds United’s insistence on a €15m valuation proved prohibitive for the Dutch club at that moment. Piroe noted:

“At that moment, they found €15m too much. At that time, they still had to get rid of Weghorst and other strikers.”

How Did West Ham United Secure the Signature of the Surinamese International?

With Ajax unwilling to match the initial valuation without resolving their existing squad surplus, West Ham United intervened to satisfy the financial expectations of Leeds United. As reported by Ben Jacobs, West Ham United structured an agreement comprising an initial season-long loan with a conditional obligation to purchase the player permanently.

The full package, including loan fees and the purchase obligation, is valued at up to £12m to £15m, contingent on West Ham United securing promotion back to the Premier League following their recent relegation.

As reported by West Ham United’s official media, manager Nuno Espírito Santo approved the acquisition to strengthen the team’s attacking options for the EFL Championship campaign. Following the announcement of his transfer to the London Stadium, Piroe remarked:

“It’s a joy to have got everything over the line. I’m delighted to be here and I’m ready to go.”

What Role Did Daniel Farke’s Squad Planning Play in the Forward’s Exit?

Piroe’s departure followed a shift in his status within the squad under Leeds United manager Daniel Farke. Having previously featured as a primary goalscorer during Leeds United’s Championship title-winning campaign—where he collected the division’s Golden Boot with 19 goals—Piroe saw his first-team opportunities limited following structural squad changes at Elland Road.

With competition for forward positions increasing, the Leeds management deemed the player surplus to requirements, enabling his representatives to seek alternatives across European football.

Leeds United Transfer Deadline Day Deals: Underwood Oversees Moves (West Yorkshire 2026)

Background of the Transfer Development

Joel Piroe originally moved to English football in July 2021 when Swansea City signed him from PSV Eindhoven.

Across two seasons with the Welsh club, the attacker established a consistent goalscoring record, recording 41 league goals in 91 Championship appearances. His performances prompted Leeds United to acquire his services in August 2023 for an undisclosed fee in excess of £10m.

During his tenure at Elland Road, Piroe made 104 appearances and registered 32 goals in all competitions. His most notable contribution occurred during the 2024–25 season, in which he scored four goals in a single 6–0 victory over Stoke City to confirm Leeds United’s return to the Premier League, before later securing the league title.

Internationally, Piroe represented the Netherlands at various youth levels before changing his international allegiance to Suriname in January 2026, subsequently making his senior international debut later that year.

Prediction: How This Development Affects the Relevant Stakeholders

For West Ham United and their supporters, securing Piroe adds a proven goalscorer with extensive Championship experience to their squad as they aim to achieve immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

If Piroe replicates the goalscoring form that earned him the division’s Golden Boot during the 2024–25 campaign, West Ham United will gain a significant competitive advantage over their promotion rivals.

Conversely, should the club fail to secure promotion, the activation clause of the agreement may remain unfulfilled, requiring further financial evaluation between the involved clubs at the end of the 2026–27 season.
