Tarik Muharemović scored his first competitive international goal for Bosnia and Herzegovina as Sergej Barbarez’s side secured a 4-2 UEFA Nations League victory over Romania at the National Arena in Bucharest.
The defender was named among Bosnia’s key performers on a productive night for the visitors, contributing at both ends of the pitch as Bosnia established a commanding lead before Romania fought back in the second half.
Muharemović doubled Bosnia’s advantage in the 19th minute, rising to meet a corner and directing his header beyond the Romanian defence.
Armin Gigović had opened the scoring seven minutes earlier, heading home from an Esmir Bajraktarević cross, before Daniel Bîrligea reduced the deficit for Romania in the 28th minute.
Haris Tabaković restored Bosnia’s two-goal advantage shortly before half-time, reacting quickest to a spilled ball to make it 3-1.
Ermin Mahmić added a fourth in the 55th minute after another well-delivered ball from Bajraktarević, although Romania responded seven minutes later when Alexandru Cicâldău found the net with a swerving long-range effort.
Despite Romania’s second goal, Bosnia held on to claim a 4-2 victory.
For Muharemović, the evening was particularly significant. His goal marked his first competitive international strike for Bosnia and Herzegovina, while his defensive contribution underlined his importance to Barbarez’s side.
The defender completed 36 passes, including three into the final third. He also recorded two tackles, two blocks, nine clearances, four interceptions and five ball recoveries as Bosnia dealt with Romania’s attacking pressure.
Muharemović’s performance will give Barbarez another selection decision to consider ahead of Bosnia’s next fixture against Sweden on October 2.
Following his contribution in Bucharest, Muharemović will be hoping to retain his place in the starting XI when Bosnia return to Nations League action.
