Gabriel Gudmundsson played the full 90 minutes as Sweden secured a 3-1 victory over Poland in their UEFA Nations League League B, Group 4 fixture at the Strawberry Arena in Solna.
The left-back produced a solid performance as Sweden responded strongly after Poland threatened to take control of the contest.
Sweden made a fast start, taking the lead in the eighth minute through Benjamin Nygren. Poland levelled shortly before half-time when Sebastian Szymański found the net, leaving the sides level at the break.
Under manager Graham Potter, Sweden stepped up their performance after the interval. Yasin Ayari restored the hosts’ advantage in the 63rd minute with a curling finish before Viktor Gyökeres completed the scoring nine minutes later, volleying home to make it 3-1.
Gudmundsson played an important role throughout the contest, offering both defensive security and an outlet on the left flank.
The Sweden international completed 33 passes, created one chance and made three passes into the final third. Defensively, he registered two blocks, two clearances, two recoveries and one interception during his 90-minute outing.
The performance will give Gudmundsson confidence as Sweden prepare for their next Nations League fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The match could also provide an interesting club connection, with Gudmundsson potentially facing his Leeds teammate Tarik Muharemović if both players are selected by their respective national-team managers.
Muharemović was also on the scoresheet in Bosnia’s 4-2 victory over Romania, scoring his first competitive international goal for the country.
Gudmundsson will now hope Potter retains faith in him for the Bosnia fixture, which could see the two Leeds players go head-to-head on the international stage.
