Leeds United suffered their first league defeat of the season in a 2-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.Ā
Leeds shocked the home crowd in the 55th minute when James Justin gave his side the lead. The visitors broke forward with real purpose as Gudmundsson burst down the left and drilled a dangerous ball across the six-yard box. Justin arrived unmarked at the far post, met the ball in stride and calmly guided his finish into the top-left corner. Gabriel threw himself at it on the line, but he couldnāt keep it out.
Leedsā lead didnāt last long, as Arsenal responded in the 62nd minute. Madueke opted to use his weaker right foot this time and delivered an inviting cross into the area. White did brilliantly to nod it back across goal, where fellow full-back Calafiori had found space in the heart of the box. The Italian nodded the ball past Trafford and into the net.
Eight minutes later, Leeds found themselves behind. Rice played a brilliant backheel into the path of Guimarães. The Brazilian wasted no time in setting his sights, picking out the bottom-left corner with a precise finish.
Arsenal almost made it three in the 83rd minute. Rice took the ball down inside the area and, with seemingly nowhere to go, produced a brilliant piece of footwork to dance his way to the byline. The England international then cut it back perfectly for Ćdegaard, whose contact was all wrong as the ball squirmed away.
The missed chance could have given Leeds United an opportunity to gain momentum, but they failed to create anything tangible to rescue a point.
In the post-match press conference, Daniel Farke described the defeat as āheartbreakingā.
āGutted for my lads because they showed an excellent performance today. Iām heartbroken that we didnāt take anything away. But also proud because we played excellent in the first half.
āI said at half-time, if we have more clarity and belief in our situations, then we can win this game. We went for it, even to score the second goal, we had the momentum on our side, but Arsenal are the reigning champions. One of the best teams, if not the best team in Europe this means one of the best teams in the world. Even with little details, they are able to capitalise. All credit goes to them; they found a way to turn this game.ā
He also spoke about Arsenalās comeback:
āFor 65 minutes, we were dominant, but they have quality players from the bench. With a little bit of luck, out of not much, they equalised, and they are all of a sudden back in the game.
āWe tried everything until the final whistle, but we couldnāt find the answer, so today we have to accept the loss.ā
The defeat meant Leeds dropped to seventh in the Premier League. They have suffered one defeat, recorded two wins and drawn three times in the league this season.
Leeds will look to bounce back when they welcome Manchester United to Elland Road in their next fixture, scheduled to take place on Sunday, 18 October.
