Leeds Rhinos (The Leeds Times) October 10, 2026 – Former England international winger Ryan Hall has brought down the curtain on a stellar 20-year career by announcing his immediate retirement from professional rugby league. The 38-year-old winger, who scored 358 tries across 540 professional games, departs as one of the most decorated figures in the modern era of the sport. Hall made his first-grade debut for Leeds Rhinos in 2007 and went on to feature for Sydney Roosters in the NRL and Hull KR before returning to AMT Headingley for his final playing stint. Following his decision, tributes have poured in from across the global rugby league community, led by Leeds Rhinos head coach Brad Arthur and sporting director Ian Blease.

As reported by Ben Olawumi of Love Rugby League, Hall stated that

“I’m officially retiring from playing rugby league. I think the time’s right I hang up the boots. I’ve done it for 20 years and I’ve loved every minute of it. The club’s in a good position to go with the youth, that’s the natural progression in rugby league. I’ve always wanted the best for the club at heart and if the decision is to go with the youth at this point in time, that suits me down to a tee because I have had 20 years of loving every second of it. That’s enough.”

As reported by Serious About Rugby League, Leeds Rhinos head coach Brad Arthur stated that

“I am pleased to have had the honour to work with Ryan over the last couple of years. He has performed at the very highest level for his club and country and he leaves the field on his terms, having maintained his presence for 20 years. That is a remarkable achievement. It is testament to the man he is happy to walk away without a huge fanfare, but I am sure with the satisfaction of a job well done.”

As reported by Love Rugby League, Leeds Rhinos sporting director Ian Blease stated that

“On behalf of everyone at the Rhinos I would like to thank Ryan for everything he has done for the club. He has been a complete professional and set the standards for our young players to follow. He has always put the team first and has enjoyed a career that has rightly seen him recognised as one of the greatest players in the summer era. I am delighted he will still be connected to the club in the next chapter of his career.”

As reported by the official Rugby Football League (RFL) media team, Hall reflected on his international career and his final days playing in front of the Leeds home crowd, stating that

“Representing your country is the pinnacle of what your career should be. You’re playing and representing everyone who’s played rugby in the country and lives in the country.”

Regarding his return to Headingley, Hall added:

“I said at the time it would be a dream come true to go full circle and finish off in front of a Leeds crowd, which I’m lucky enough to have been able to do. Not everybody gets that option to finish how they want to do it. I know we could have finished with a trophy in our hands, but that wasn’t to be. But I’m certainly over the moon that I got to finish here at AMT Headingley in front of the crowd that supported me for over 20 years.”

Regarding his upcoming testimonial match in January against Hull FC, as reported by the Rugby Football League (RFL), Hall stated that

“I will feature in that game. It won’t be massive amounts. That game has got to be a stepping stone to get the players ready who are going to take to the field in Round One of the Super League. But I will be making a small cameo appearance in that game, which it would be nice to put the boots on for one final time.”

Ryan Hall retires from rugby league with Leeds Rhinos testimonial in 2026.

What is the background of this particular development?

Ryan Hall’s retirement marks the conclusion of a 20-year career that began in 2007 when he made his debut for Leeds Rhinos against Bradford Bulls at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Over two separate spells with Leeds (2007–2018 and 2025–2026), Hall played 381 games and scored 257 tries for the West Yorkshire outfit. During the Golden Era of the Rhinos, Hall was instrumental in securing six Super League Grand Final victories, two Challenge Cup titles, two World Club Challenge trophies, and two Super League Leaders’ Shields.

He was individually recognised with the Lance Todd Trophy in 2014 as player of the match in the Challenge Cup Final and earned inclusion in four Super League Dream Teams.

In 2019, Hall made the transition to Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) with the Sydney Roosters, spending two seasons down under before returning to England to join Hull KR in 2021. During his four-year tenure with Hull KR, he maintained a high scoring rate, accumulating 274 Super League tries in total across his career to hold second place on the competition’s all-time try-scoring list behind Leigh Leopards winger Josh Charnley.

On the international stage, Hall represented England 40 times, scoring 39 tries, and earned two caps for Great Britain. He represented his country across three World Cups, including the 2017 tournament where England finished as runners-up. Hall will transition into a commercial role with Leeds Rhinos following a three-month testimonial period.

How will this development affect Leeds Rhinos and Super League?

Ryan Hall’s retirement directly impacts several groups across the rugby league landscape:

  • For Leeds Rhinos Squad and Coaching Staff: The departure of Hall creates an immediate opening on the wing for younger squad members. Head coach Brad Arthur will need to integrate emerging talent into the starting line-up for the upcoming Super League season. However, Hall’s decision to take up a commercial role within the club ensures that his leadership and experience remain accessible to the playing group off the field.
  • For Leeds Rhinos Supporters: Fans will have one final opportunity to see Hall in action during his brief cameo appearance in the pre-season testimonial match against Hull FC at AMT Headingley in January. His transition off the pitch marks the formal end of an era represented by the core players of Leeds’ dominant trophy-winning period.
  • For Super League Competitors: Hall’s retirement cements Josh Charnley’s position at the top of the Super League all-time try-scoring charts, removing his closest active challenger for the record. Opposing teams will no longer face one of the competition’s most effective yardage-making wingers.
