As reported by police correspondents across regional media outlets, West Yorkshire Police confirmed the arrest took place on Thursday, 5 November. The updated custody status follows several significant developments earlier in the week, including court appearances and the conditional release of other individuals detained during initial searches.

What Details Have Police Released Regarding the Suspects and Charges?

As reported by Megan Banner of YorkshireLive, a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police issued a statement regarding the sequence of arrests in the murder probe. The spokesperson stated that

“detectives investigating the murder of Raheim Jackson on Hedley Chase in Leeds on 24 October have arrested a further man. The 28-year-old man was arrested in Nottingham yesterday on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody”.

Regarding the suspect apprehended prior to the Nottingham arrest, the police spokesperson added that “a 39-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday (4 November), has been bailed pending further enquiries”.

Prior to these recent arrests, primary charges had already been brought against a key suspect. As reported by crime reporter Charles Gray of the Yorkshire Evening Post, 26-year-old Michael Gyedu, of Rathmell Road, Leeds, was apprehended in London by officers from the Metropolitan Police on 30 October. Gyedu was formally charged with murder on 2 November and appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court that same day.

During a subsequent appearance at Leeds Crown Court, a provisional trial date was set for 5 April. The court noted the trial could last up to 10 days, and Gyedu was remanded in custody until a plea hearing scheduled for 27 November.

How Have the Family and Community Responded to the Loss of Raheim Jackson?

As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, the family of Raheim Jackson, who was affectionately known as “Reema”, issued a formal statement reflecting on their loss. In their tribute, the family expressed deep grief, stating:

“Rahiem was loved and adored by his sisters and family. He had a beautiful heart and beautiful soul; his smile was so infectious, and he lit up the room with his presence. Rahiem would have gone above and beyond for anybody he cared for”.

The family added: “He wasn’t just a brother he was a son, an uncle, a father, a partner, a nephew, a cousin, a grandson, brother in law and friend and he did not deserve to die the way he did. We are heartbroken and in so much pain and have been left inconsolable as a family“.

The family also appealed directly to members of the public to assist law enforcement officers, urging:

“If anyone has any information to help the police find the persons who murdered Rahiem, please can you come forward”.

West Yorkshire Police continue to encourage anyone with relevant information to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team via 101 or through the force’s Live Chat system quoting reference 13260606745. Information can also be provided anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Background of This Particular Development

The investigation stems from an incident on Saturday, 24 October, on Hedley Chase in the New Wortley area of Leeds. Emergency services responded to reports of an assault involving weapons, where 38-year-old Raheim Jackson sustained fatal injuries.

In the immediate aftermath, West Yorkshire Police established a perimeter and launched a homicide investigation. Over the following fortnight, police activities expanded beyond West Yorkshire. Detectives worked alongside partner forces, including the Metropolitan Police in London and police units in Nottinghamshire, to trace individuals linked to the incident. This led to multiple arrests in London, Leeds, and Nottingham as investigators worked to reconstruct the events surrounding the fatal attack.

Impact on the Local Community and Wider Public

This major criminal investigation directly affects residents of New Wortley, the wider Leeds community, and the family and associates of the victim.

For residents living near Hedley Chase, the ongoing police presence, forensic cordons, and high-visibility patrols serve as a visible reminder of serious violence in the neighborhood. Such incidents often prompt heightened security concerns and increased contact between local residents and community policing teams.

For the judicial system and the public, the cross-county arrests highlight the resources required to track individuals across multiple police force areas, including London and Nottinghamshire. As court proceedings for Michael Gyedu move toward a trial in April, local residents and observers will follow the legal process to see how the justice system addresses violent crime in the area.
