Key Points

  • Road Closure Details: Skeltons Lane in Whinmoor, east Leeds, is completely closed to traffic for five weeks due to storm drainage roadworks.
  • Effective Dates: The closure is operational from Monday, 17 August 2026, until Friday, 25 September 2026.
  • Primary Bus Affected: The Transdev Harrogate Bus Company’s Service 7 (The 7) is diverted in both directions.
  • Diversion Route: Bypassing traffic and public transport are rerouted via the East Leeds Orbital Road (ELOR) Ring Road, Wetherby Road, and Red Hall Lane.
  • School Bus Impact: Dedicated school services BS47 (Boston Spa Academy) and WH22 (Wetherby High School) are running altered routes via Coal Road, Red Hall Lane, Wetherby Road, Ring Road Whinmoor Fields, and Skeltons Lane.
  • Suspended Bus Stops: Bramley Gardens, Cherrywood Gardens, and Skeltons Lane stops in both directions are suspended for the duration of the works.
  • Alternative Passengers Stops: Commuters are directed to use alternative stops at Naburn Approach or Bramley Grange.

Leeds (The Leeds Times) August 17, 2026 — Commuters and residents across east Leeds face five weeks of local transport disruptions following the full closure of Skeltons Lane in Whinmoor. The vital suburban connector has been shut to accommodate extensive infrastructure and storm drainage works, directly impacting major public transport corridors connecting Leeds and North Yorkshire. Transdev’s flagship Service 7 route is subject to substantial diversions, omitting multiple residential bus stops until late September, while local school buses face rerouting as the academic term approaches. Highways authorities and transport operators have published comprehensive alternative arrangements to mitigate delays across the north-east Leeds road network.

Which Routes and Bus Services Are Directly Affected by the Skeltons Lane Closure?

As outlined in travel bulletins published by West Yorkshire Metro, the key thoroughfare of Skeltons Lane in Whinmoor is closed to all through traffic between Monday, 17 August 2026, and Friday, 25 September 2026.

The main service impacted by the ongoing highway works is Service 7, operated by The Harrogate Bus Company (a subsidiary of Transdev).

The service, which runs between Leeds City Centre, Seacroft, Oakwood, Wetherby, and Harrogate, cannot traverse its standard route through the central stretch of Whinmoor.

In both directions, Service 7 buses are being diverted away from the closed sector via the East Leeds Orbital Road (ELOR) Ring Road, Wetherby Road, and Red Hall Lane.

In addition to public routes, specialised educational transport is affected ahead of the autumn term. As noted in school transport alerts from West Yorkshire Metro, service BS47 to Boston Spa Academy and service WH22 to Wetherby High School will operate along their regular paths as far as Coal Road before diverting via Red Hall Lane, Wetherby Road, Ring Road Whinmoor Fields, and Skeltons Lane, before rejoining their normal routes at Thorner Lane.

Which Bus Stops Are Suspended and Where Should Passengers Board?

Due to the rerouting of services around the roadworks zone, several established bus stops along Skeltons Lane and adjacent streets have been temporarily taken out of service in both directions.

The full list of suspended bus stops includes:

  • Bramley Gardens (Stop numbers 45013294 and 45050103)
  • Cherrywood Gardens (Stop numbers 45013722 and 45029825)
  • Skeltons Lane (Stop numbers 45013723 and 45050131)

To accommodate displaced passengers, transport providers have identified secondary pick-up and drop-off locations throughout the diversion period:

  • For passengers travelling towards Leeds City Centre: Boarding is available at stop 45013295 (Bramley Grange) or stop 45010577 (Naburn Approach).
  • For passengers travelling towards Harrogate and Wetherby: Boarding is available at stop 45010576 (Naburn Approach) or stop 45050104 (Bramley Grange).

Travel operators have urged passengers using these routes between 07:30 and 17:00 daily to allow additional time for their journeys to account for peak-hour congestion along the orbital diversion routes.

What Is the Background to the Infrastructure Development in East Leeds?

The closure of Skeltons Lane represents a core element of ongoing utility, drainage, and highway modernization programs across east Leeds. The specific engineering objective during this five-week window focuses on essential storm drainage integration.

This scheme is intrinsically linked to the broader infrastructure development stemming from the East Leeds Orbital Road (ELOR) project, which was designed to improve capacity, support new housing developments, and alleviate historical congestion points across Whinmoor, Scholes, and Cross Gates.

Integrating modern, high-capacity drainage systems under key arterial routes like Skeltons Lane requires heavy excavations, preventing safe passage for public transit vehicles and regular private motor traffic.

How Will This Development Affect Local Residents and Commuters?

The five-week road closure is expected to have a noticeable operational impact on several key groups across the Whinmoor and wider Leeds commuting belt:

  • Daily Bus Passengers: Commuters relying on Service 7 face longer journey times due to the extended geographical loop via Wetherby Road and the East Leeds Orbital Road. Displaced passengers will need to walk further to access operational stops at Naburn Approach or Bramley Grange.
  • School Children and Parents: With the closure extending through late September, the reopening of schools in early September will test the temporary bus routes (BS47 and WH22). Families may experience minor timing adjustments during morning pickup routines.
  • Local Motorists and Residents: Residential streets adjacent to the Skeltons Lane closure are likely to experience increased secondary traffic as local drivers seek shortcuts toward the A58 (Wetherby Road) and A64 (York Road). While emergency vehicle access and essential service access to residential properties within the immediate roadworks perimeter are strictly maintained, general through-traffic must rely on official ring road diversions.
