Evelyn Simpson, who lives at Care UK’s Weavers Court on Naylor Avenue, shared her secret to a long and happy life as she celebrated the impressive milestone.
To mark the occasion, team members at Weavers Court invited Evelyn’s friends and family for an intimate celebration, decorating the home with balloons and banners before presenting her with a special cake made by the home’s Lifestyle Manager.
A surprise was also planned for Evelyn, who has always been a big fan of legendary crooners Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones. On the day, Tom Jones lookalike Ian Scott, with the voice to match, made an appearance at the celebration where he serenaded Evelyn.
Evelyn was born on 15th September 1922 in Leeds, where she lived for most of her life. She loved working with children, spending her early career as a teacher at Middleton School before later becoming a headteacher at White Beck School.
A woman of many hobbies, Evelyn was also a dressmaker in her younger years, as well as a keen cyclist who once cycled more than 90km from Leeds to Filey and back in the same day.
When asked for her thoughts on turning 104, Elizabeth said that “cycling and good exercise” was the way to a fulfilling and long life, adding:
“It was a lovely birthday, and I especially loved the Tom Jones tribute performance.”
Sarah Kunica, Home Manager at Weavers Court, said:
“We were so excited to celebrate such a special day with Evelyn. As a much-loved resident at Weavers Court, it was wonderful to mark this tremendous milestone with Evelyn and her family.
“Here at Weavers Court, everything we do centres around our ethos of ensuring residents live active and fulfilling lives – and Evelyn’s 104th birthday celebration was no exception. It was lovely to see how happy she was to be surrounded by those closest to her on her special day.”
