What Is Garforth and Why Should Tourists Visit This Leeds Town?

Garforth is a town 6.5 miles east of Central Leeds with 14,957 residents (2011 census), two railway stations on the Leeds-York mainline, direct M1/A1(M) access, and a transformation from coal mining village to commuter town with modern leisure facilities.

Garforth sits in the metropolitan borough of the City of Leeds, Yorkshire, at coordinates 53°47′31″N 1°23′17″W. The town lies 16 miles south-west of York and 10 miles north of Wakefield, positioned on the A63 road linking the M1 and A1(M) motorways. Manufacturing and motor-vehicle repair account for more than one-third of the local workforce, with Ginetta Cars located on the north-side light industrial estate.

The name Garforth derives from Old Norse words gāra (triangular plot of land) and ford (ford), meaning “ford at a triangular plot of land” or “River Crossing of the Spear”. The place-name first appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Gereford and Gereforde.

Coal mining shaped Garforth’s development from 1262, when William and Alice de Baruby leased land in Shippen for surface coal extraction using picks and spades. The Gascoigne family owned workings at Oxclose, Barnbow, Lazencroft and Whinmoor by the end of the 16th century. Between 1831-1931, Garforth changed from a farming community with 782 residents to an industrial town. The Isabella Pit opened in 1833, the Sisters Pit in 1843, and the Trench Pit in 1899 employing 492 men before closing in 1930.

Modern Garforth expanded rapidly after the M1 extension created access points at Junctions 46 and 47, driving commercial, light industrial and residential development. The town now serves as a commuter base for Leeds, York and Wakefield, with rail connections to Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Liverpool and Blackpool.

As you explore the modern town with its retail parks and recreation grounds, you are crossing land with deep mining heritage. Read about the full [history of mining in Garforth from 1262 to 1967] to understand how coal extraction shaped the town’s roads, railways and community identity.

Garforth has two brass bands (Garforth Jubilee Band and Garforth Brass), ten traditional public houses, a library, a one-stop Leeds City Council centre, and two indoor play areas for children. The lively Garforth Community Choir formed in October 2015 meets at Garforth Academy on Wednesdays at 7.00 pm during school term time.
